Student Places 5th in National AGLOA Academic Challenge!

Four Wayne County students brought home more than sun tans from their recent trip to compete in the AGLOA national academic challenge in Orlando, Florida that concluded on April 28.

C.J. Shepard from Fort Gay, who qualified for his first national tournament, showed that he had done his homework in World Events by besting more than half of the sizeable field in the competition.  Erin Wroblewski, a Vinson Middle School student, competed in her second straight national finals, showed particular strength in the US Presidents event.

In the 4th-6th grade division, Fort Gay Middle School classmates Logan Barnett and Taylor Spry teamed up to bring home a fourth place finish in World Events by finishing 5th and 13th respectively.  The fifth place finish netted Barnett an individual medal at the tournament.  Taylor Spry improved on his overall scores from a year ago, finishing near the top in US Presidents and the language based game “Linguishtik” which will make him a threat for the sweepstakes award at next year’s tournament which will be held in Knoxville, TN.

The students credited their hometown teachers, like Lisa Swimm from Fort Gay Middle, for working with them on perfecting their grammar skills.  They also pointed to parents and coaches, who, they say, pushed them to work hard but allowed them the opportunity to enjoy the national tournament experience.

The four students are definitely eager to get home and share their stories and memories from the 14th annual AGLOA national tournament with friends and family.  They’ll be easy to spot, too.  They will be the ones with the sun tans.
